Orthodontic treatment is similar in adults and adolescents, but there are some differences. Adults may have experienced some breakdown or loss of their teeth and the bone that supports the teeth and may require periodontal treatment before, during, and/or after orthodontic treatment. Loss of teeth or the supporting bone may limit the amount and direction of tooth movement. Also, more frequent cleanings at your general dentist’s office may be required to maintain healthy teeth and gums. Dr. Mellion will discuss with you the best procedures and cleaning schedules and also will work closely with your general dentist to provide the best possible care.
